Tudor takes title
By Hugh Condry www.telegraph.co.uk/sport
James Tudor, 24, became the youngest winner of the men's championship since John Bryan took the title at 18 in 1978 when he won the Intermediate race aboard Itsalf at Sunday's Tiverton Staghounds' fixture.
This was his 35th winner of the season and took him one ahead of the unfortunate title-holder Richard Burton, who has not ridden since injuring an ankle on May 12.
Tudor celebrated taking the Fuller's Brewery Trophy by winning the following Men's Open as well with Johnsair, trained by owner Gareth Perkins "just down the road" from the Llancarfan stable of Evan Williams, where the new champion is an assistant.Williams himself is a former champion, having won the award with 38 wins in 2002.
The season ends on Saturday at Umberleigh so no one can catch Tudor, whose next-nearest rival is Nick Scholfield on 25 wins.
Among the women riders the situation could still change. Claire Allen, who heads the table on 26 wins, finished third with her only ride on Sunday, but the six-times former leading lady Polly Gundry moved on to 25 when she triumphed in the with Craigmor.
Diana Hobbs, daughter of trainer Philip and leading woman novice, led Sunday's Ladies' Open on Koquelicot until overtaken by Harnage, who then gave way to the strong late run of Double Honour, ridden by Diana's sister Katherine. _________________ http://www.artforums.co.uk |
